ABSTRACT: The City of Calgary lies along the line of confluence of the Cordilleran and Laurentide ice sheets which together covered most of Canada during the last glaciation. Geological maps and stratigraphic sections published by the ARC - Alberta Research Council (Moran, 1986) present a complex interpretation with six overlapping till formations, differentiated primarily on the basis of differences in composition not normally recorded in geotechnical investigations. This paper presents a critical review of the ARC interpretations, as well as geotechnical data and field observations from three sites in eastern Calgary, and suggests an alternate, simpler stratigraphic history for this area of Calgary.
