ABSTRACT: Urban excavations and underground constructions generally induce movements of the ground and deformations of the surrounding structures. There are multitudes of means and methods to monitor those collateral effects, the final goal being to optimize the construction process whilst mitigating the construction risk. This paper gives a brief overview of a representative monitoring program, including all steps from the design, through the operations, down to the role of the task force exploiting the monitoring information. Although the value of the monitoring scope is now recognized for such projects, there are still a lot of education required to optimize the specifications, as well as the way the monitoring information is used for the benefit of the project. The author highlights key specifications which enhance the intrinsic value of a monitoring program, technically but also in terms of cost-efficiency. There is a special focus on recent technological innovations in the industry and good practices experienced in current iconic projects. The presentation will be illustrated by examples taken from the Alaskan Way Tunnel in Seattle, WA.
