Geotechnical Challenges in Willingdon Avenue Interchange on the Port Mann Highway 1 Improvement Project

ABSTRACT: The Willingdon Avenue Interchange is located near the west end of the Port Mann Highway 1 Project, a recently completed major infrastructure upgrade in the Metro Vancouver area. The interchange, originally constructed in the 1960s, is underlain by peat and clayey silt with stability and settlement challenges. The interchange remained relatively unchanged until the recent upgrade works which were completed between 2009 and 2014. The recent upgrades involved the widening Highway 1, replacement of the Willingdon Avenue Underpass and realignment of interchange ramps. An environmental compensation area which included cuts for channel alignments was also constructed in the northeast quadrant of the interchange within the footprint of a previous deep-seated failure in the 1960s. This paper will discuss the design details developed for the original 1960s construction and compare them with the design details used for the recent upgrades, which included a shorter Willingdon Avenue Underpass constructed in two stages, bridge approaches supported using pile-supported embankments and lightweight fill, preload/surcharge for interchange ramps and an observational approach to construct the environmental compensation area where the 1960s failure occurred.

RÉSUMÉ: Port Mann , un projet de Vancouversur de la tourbe molle et compressible et du silt argileux, ce qui présente plusieurs défis en termes de stabilité et de tassement. L-glissement en profondeur survenu dans les années 60. Le présent article discute des détails de conception de la construction originale des années 60 et les compare avec ceux des récents travaux de réfection, qui comprenaient le pont routier de Willingdon Avenue plus court construit en deux étapes, les approches de pont soutenues par un remblai supporté apdans les années 60.
