ABSTRACT: Bidirectional shear test provides a physical way to study the complex response of soils subjected to cyclic shearing applied simultaneously in two directions on a plane. This test complements the simpler loading condition simulated by unidirectional simple shear test, and targets the state of loading in many cases experienced in the real field conditions. This kind of test dates back to more than forty years ago, evolved and progressed with the establishment, development and refinement of the devices. As a result, a large quantity of available experimental data has been generated over these years. Focusing on general soils, this paper provides a concise review of the loading paths adopted in the bidirectional shear tests, collects the available experimental data, and organizes them based on the types of test and soil with the corresponding details. The comprehensive collection is used to learn and summarize the highlights of soil response subjected to those very complex but realistic types of multidirectional cyclic loading. Meanwhile, the outcome of the paper is also a basis for development and validation of advanced multidimensional constitutive models, from which geotechnical earthquake engineering problems benefit a lot.
