The influence of back pressure on the cyclic resistance of tailings using the triaxial-simple shear device

ABSTRACT: A laboratory test program on the dynamic behavior of tailings was conducted using an innovative testing apparatus developed by the -Québec (IREQ) and the University of Sherbrooke, the triaxial-simple shear device (TxSS). Back pressure is used in laboratory testing for the saturation of specimens and the fine grain size of mine tailings makes its use very convenient. However, in undrained cyclic triaxial testing, back pressure is known to affect the dynamic behavior and cyclic resistance. Prior to a laboratory test program on the dynamic behavior of tailings, ten cyclic tests were performed at an effective confining stress of 100 kPa with back pressures ranging from 50 to 400 kPa to evaluate the influence of the back pressure on the dynamic behavior of the tailings in TxSS testing. The back pressure was found to have no appreciable effect on the behavior of the tailings.

RÉSUMÉ: Un programme de laboratoire sur -Québec (IREQ) et triaxial-simple shear (TxSS). La contre-pression est utilisée dans le laboratoire pour la saturation des échantillons et en raison de la granulométrie fine des résidus, lutilisation de contre-pression est convenable. Cependant, dans les essais cycliques triaxiaux, il est connu que la contre-pression a un effet sur le comportement dynamique et la résistance cyclique. Préalablement à un programme de laboratoire sur comportement dynamique des résidus, 10 essais de cisaillement cyclique ont été réalisés sous une contrainte de confinement effective de 100 kPa avec des valeurs de contre-de celle-ci sur le comportement dynamique des résidus testés avec le TxSS. Il a été démontré que la contre-le comportement des résidus miniers.
