ABSTRACT: Modulus reduction and damping ratio curves are important input parameters for dynamic soil response analysis. An NGI type simple shear device was enhanced to enable accurate small strain measurements using appropriate instrumentation in an attempt to construct these curves under simple shear loading mode. Quasi-cyclic, small strain or stress-controlled, simple shear tests were carried out on undisturbed Champlain Sea clay and reconstituted Fraser Delta sand specimens. This work was carried out as a precursor to a more comprehensive CRD project on Champlain Sea clay from various sites across Ontario and Quebec, and provides an initial database of confident modulus reduction and damping curves.
RÉSUMÉ: Les courbes de réduction de module et de rapport d'amortissement sont des paramètres d'entrée importants pour une analyse dynamique de la réponse du sol. Un dispositif de cisaillement simple de type NGI a été amélioré pour effectuer des mesures précises de contraintes en utilisant une instrumentation appropriée afin de construire ces courbes sous un chargement de type cisaillement simple. Des essais de cisaillement simple quasi-cycliques, à petites déformations et contrôlés par contraintes ont été effectués sur des argiles de la mer de Champlain non perturbées et des spécimens de sable reconstitués du Delta du Fraser. Un projet de recherche plus complet sur l'argile de la mer de Champlain provenant de divers sites de l'Ontario et du Québec a été mené à l'aide de cet équipement.
