Geotechnical characterization of residual soils from igneous and metamorphic rocks at three sites in South America

ABSTRACT: This paper summarizes the results of geotechnical investigation programs for characterization of residual soils from igneous and metamorphic rocks at jungle sites in Ecuador, Guyana and Brazil. An overview of the field and laboratory test results from these sites is presented, providing details on the field investigations (e.g., drilling; Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), Vane Shear Tests (VST) and in-situ permeability tests) including a comparison of their index, compressibility and shear strength properties. The results from the investigations are shown in a framework to review how intimately the residual soils properties are linked to the sites geology and show how these properties were used in practice.
RÉSUMÉ: Le présent document résume les résultats des programmes d'investigation géotechnique pour la caractérisation des sols résiduels de roches ignées et métamorphiques dans les régions tropicales de l'Equateur, la Guyane et le Brésil. Un aperçu du terrain et des résultats de laboratoire tests de ces sites est présenté, fournissant des détails sur les études de terrain exécutées sur chaque site (p. Ex., Forage, tests de pénétration standard (SPT), tests de cisaillement de vaisseaux (VST) et tests de perméabilité in situ) et Résultats de laboratoire incluant une comparaison des tests d'indice, de compressibilité et de résistance au cisaillement. Les résultats de ces enquêtes sont présentés sur un cadre d'examen pour quantifier la relation entre les propriétés des sols résiduels et la géologie du site et comment ces propriétés peuvent être utilisées dans la pratique.
