The role of lateral stress coefficient (K0) on Shear wave velocity correlations for Canadian Clays

ABSTRACT: Shear wave velocity, Vs is a key parameter allowing characterization of a soil in the elastic range ( < 10-3 %). Several empirical correlations exist to estimate Vs. They are based namely on the mean effective stress, which requires to obtain the lateral stress coefficient at rest, K0. This paper presents the range of Vs calculated from various values of K0 and for different forms of Vs correlations applied to St-Alban clay, QC. This range of Vs raises questions on the effect of the exponent n affecting the mean effective stress present in most correlations. The results allow to evaluate the relative effect on Vs of K0 and the void ratio function. Vs obtained from correlations is also discussed based on accurate laboratory measurements using piezoelectric ring actuator technique, P-RAT.

RÉSUMÉ: La vitesse des ondes de cisaillement, Vs est un paramètre fondamental permettant de caractériser un sol dans le domaine élastique. Des publications ont présenté des équations permettant de relier Vs géotechniques coefficient des terres au repos, K0. Cet article présente des valeurs de Vs calculées à partir de différentes valeurs de K0 et pour différentes formes de corrélations pour lde St-Alban, QC. Plusieurs valeurs de Vs exposant n qui affecte la contrainte effective moyenne dans les corrélations de Vs. relatif sur Vs de K0 et de la fonction de ice des vides. Cet article permet aussi d'évaluer le rôle de K0 dans les corrélations selon des mesures précises de Vs en laboratoire en utilisant la technique des anneaux piézoélectriques, P-RAT.
