ABSTRACT: Repeated cycles of glaciation have significantly influenced the physiography of Eastern Ontario. Deglaciation of the last ice age resulted in the formation of the Champlain Sea, an inland arm of the Atlantic Ocean (10,000-12,000 years BP). The sea basin be-Ottawa Valley region. The Champlain Sea deposits have notable implications for soil and sediment environmental standards in the region. As part of the Stage 2 Ottawa Light Rail Transit subsurface investigation, drilling occurred within these deposits, and barium, chromium, cobalt and hexavalent chromium were routinely detected in soil at concentrations above MOECC Table 1, while vanadium was detected above MOECC Table 3. It is hoped that this paper presents evidence that will be useful to support appropriate excess soil management decisions for future construction projects.
