ABSTRACT: Soil elements under sloping ground experience an initial static shear stress prior to earthquake shaking. During an earthquake, soil elements underneath both level and sloping ground are subjected to cyclic shear stress due to vertically propagating shear waves. Laboratory testing has been used to study liquefaction resistance and quantify soil behaviour underneath level ground as well as sloping ground, but there is a fundamental lack of understanding of how the initial static shear stress affects the cyclic behaviour of soil. In this study, a series of triaxial and cyclic simple shear tests were conducted on a sand to study the effect of initial static shear stress. A few drained triaxial compression tests were conducted to determine critical state parameters. A cyclic simple shear apparatus was employed to determine cyclic resistance with a range of initial static shear stresses. Influence of initial static shear stress on the cyclic resistance was studied and the results were compared to available results on Ottawa sand using critical state soil mechanics.
