Analysis of the water flow transferred from tailings to waste rock inclusions

ABSTRACT: This paper presents a simplified analytical solution to assess water flow at the interface between tailings and an adjacent waste rock inclusion under steady-state and transient seepage conditions. This solution, which considers a lowered water table within the tailings in the vicinity of the waste rock, is presented with sample calculation results for the flow rate transferred to the waste rock. The calculated results are compared with values obtained from numerical simulations for partial validation.


RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente une solution analytique simplifiée permettant d’évaluer le débit de l’eau à l'interface entre les résidus miniers et une inclusion de roches stériles adjacente, dans des conditions d’écoulement stationnaire et transitoire. Cette solution, qui considère une nappe d’eau abaissée dans les résidus à proximité des roches stériles, est présentée avec des exemples de résultats de calcul du débit transféré vers les roches stériles. Les résultats calculés sont comparés aux valeurs obtenues de simulations numériques pour une validation partielle.
