In the proceedings of: GeoNiagara 2021: 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference; 14th joint with IAH-CNCABSTRACT: Several embankment failures in the western Newfoundland region have been reported where clay/silt materials in the form of lacustrine or marine deposits exist. In many cases, these landslides pose a threat to infrastructures such as highways, utility/communication alignments, and residential dwellings. Geotechnical investigations, instrumentation, and monitoring of select cases could help to determine the failure mechanisms and assess the risk of future movement. This study summarizes the findings of a case along a section of the coastline in the community of Daniel's Harbour, NL. An attempt has been made to simulate the slides using a large deformation finite element (FE) modelling technique.
