In the proceedings of: GeoNiagara 2021: 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference; 14th joint with IAH-CNCABSTRACT: Highway embankments are often built over predominantly soft soils with high water content and low strength leading to excessive settlements and instability of the embankment. Utilizing lightweight fill materials to be used in the construction such embankments is a promising approach as they impose lower loads resulting in lower settlements and reducing the possibilities of shear failure. In this paper, the effects of different parameters on the embankment performance are examined by utilizing a well-documented case study of a failed embankment. The problem under consideration is numerically simulated using the finite element software PLAXIS 2D. The predictions of the developed model were validated against the failure details available for the embankment. In addition, after the failure observed at the site was replicated in the numerical model, a brief parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of the pace of construction on the overall performance of the embankment during and after construction. The obtained results show that the construction sequence can be very effectively used to control the settlement and stresses of the embankment.
