Canadian Trends in Foundation and Slope Stability Design

ABSTRACT: A simple but very insightful question of whether we, as geotechnical engineers, are overdesigning in our design projects, was brought to the attention of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) at the 2018 XVI Danube European Conference. To investigate further, a joint initiative was started by the different ISSMGE groups to conduct an international survey. Ten typical design questions were sent to geotechnical professionals around the world with a target that the results will be analyzed and presented at the International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in 2022. This paper summarizes one piece of the international study; the Canadian survey responses and an analysis of trends in the Canadian results. The purpose of this paper is not only to help the ISSMGE group to undertake this worldwide study but also to report the interesting differences in the response to the questions across the different Canadian provinces, and to note any trends between academics, young professionals, and senior consultants.

RÉSUMÉ: Une question simple mais très intéressante, à savoir si nous, en tant qu'ingénieurs géotechniciens, sommes trop conservateurs dans nos projets de conception, a été portée à l'attention de la Société internationale de mécanique des sols et de géotechnique (SIMSG) lors de la XVIe Conférence européenne du Danube 2018. Pour approfondir la question, une initiative conjointe a été lancée par les différents groupes de la SIMSG pour mener une enquête internationale dans laquelle dix questions de conception typiques ont été envoyées aux professionnels de la géotechnique du monde entier, avec pour objectif que les résultats soient analysés et présentés lors de la Conférence internationale sur la mécanique des sols et de géotechnique en 2022. Cet article résume un élément de l'étude internationale : les réponses de l'enquête provenant du Canada et une analyse des tendances des résultats canadiens. L'objectif de ce document n'est pas seulement d'aider le groupe de la SIMSG à entreprendre cette étude mondiale, mais aussi de signaler les différences intéressantes dans les réponses aux questions entre les différentes provinces et territoires canadiens, et la façon dont les réponses varient entre les étudiants, les jeunes professionnels et les consultants seniors.
