ABSTRACT: Low volume local roads are seldom paved. A portion of the paved Township Road 474 at Mitchell Beach in Alberta had failed severely needing major repair. The water level in the wetland on either side of the road was high. There were signs of frost boil, other pavement distresses and fines migration from the subgrade to the surface. The existing pavement structure was a thin layer of crusty surface and weak subgrade. To improve the serviceability of the road, Novel Polymeric Alloy (NPA) geocell-reinforced gravel base course and surface of aggregate chip seal with fiber was built on top of the existing surface. This road was one of the test cases considered by Alberta Transportation to approve NPA geocell for load support application based on its satisfactory performance. This paper discusses the design method and parameters, construction process, and the performance of the road since construction.
