ABSTRACT: Understanding the post-deposition dewatering behaviour of various kinds of high-density tailings is important to achieving performance objectives. Mechanisms that contribute to dewatering include both consolidation as well as surface processes such as evaporation or freeze-thaw. While thin-lift deposition maximizes the contribution of surface processes to dewatering, relying on such processes alone requires large impoundment footprints. This study reports experiments simulating the post-deposition dewatering of gold tailings under a number of different configurations. These experiments include column tests simulating initial settling / self-weight consolidation of gold tailings prepared at different water contents and at different lift thickness, column tests on multilayer deposition of tailings deposited at 70% solids,
