ABSTRACT: The installation of mechanically stabilised earth walls on a glacial deposit of silty clay/clayey silt soils required the design and construction of gravely sand mattresses, reinforced with multiple layers of woven polyester geogrids. The purpose of the reinforced granular mattress (RGM) was to transfer and reduce the applied loads associated with the MSE wall onto soft silty clay/ clayey silt foundation soils with low undrained shear strength. The design method adopted was developed based on the theory of static load distribution in unreinforced and reinforced cohesive soil, while the multi layer geogrid design was based on a specific load distribution model which allowed the working strain level and tensile forces in reinforcement to be calculated and compared with set design values. This paper will present the design of the reinforced granular mattress, and discuss the use of the method for an MSE wall foundation and load transfer platforms for 110 t crawler cranes.
