ABSTRACT: There are many methods available currently to measure the matric suction of unsaturated soil with various advantages and disadvantages such as cost, accuracy, reliability and the ranges of suction that can be measured. This paper describes ongoing development of a prototype matric suction sensor, which uses the principle of volume change by pore-water pressure of a porous material with a high air entry value. The limitations of the methods available, advantages of the prototype sensor compared to the other methods and the reliability/robustness of the sensor prototype are discussed.
